Feds inspect 10 Quintana Roo gas stations and temporarily close all 10 for violations

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Federal inspectors have temporarily closed 10 gas stations between Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen for violations. The gas stations were shut down during a two-day verification operation by Profeco.

12 gas stations were on the list but two refused inspection

The inspections were conducted by Profeco (the Federal Consumer Protection Agency) in coordination with the Energy, Safety and Environment Agency (ASEA) who reported vising the state of Quintana Roo on October 16 and 17.

They visited 12 service stations, two of which refused to be inspected. The 10 they did inspect were all closed for violations. The two gas stations that refused inspections were fined. During their inspections, federal officials said 20 gas measuring instruments were also seized.

The visit, they reported, was a follow up on the National Strategy to Promote Gasoline Price Stabilization, spearheaded by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. On Thursday the 16th, brigades led by Profeco (Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor) head Iván Escalante Ruiz, carried out inspections at six service stations, four in the municipality of Tulum and two in Playa del Carmen.

A total of three gas stations were seized, two of them due to the gas stations not selling full liters of fuel, and one for failing to retain information on the screen after being out of power for five minutes.

“It should be noted that one of the gas stations was dispensing 835.72 milliliters less per 20 liters of regular gasoline, leading to a complaint being filed with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR),” they said but did not say which station.

Two of the gas stations failed the liter dispensing operation

ASEA (Agencia de Seguridad Energía y Ambiente) imposed three temporary total closures for failure to display a valid environmental impact resolution and three more for failure to display a Single Environmental License.

On October 17, three inspections were carried out in the municipality of Playa del Carmen and three more in Cancun resulting in a total of 17 measuring instruments being seized, one of which was for dispensing 1,212.19 milliliters less per 20 liters of gasoline.

“This case also warrants a complaint to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR),” they said.

The remaining faults detected in the dispatching machines were due to discrepancies between the electronic records and the logbook, and due to the failure to retain information on the screen after being without power for five minutes.

ASEA imposed a temporary total closure on two gas stations for not having a Single Environmental License. It also applied the same measure to two others for not displaying a valid environmental impact authorization.

“The remaining two refused to accept inspection visits, and administrative sanctioning proceedings will be initiated,” Profeco said.
