Fed up Chiquilá residents hold CFE personnel, truck

Chiquilá, Q.R. — A group of angry Chiquilá residents held CFE workers Friday after failed attempts to resolve ongoing blackouts. The two Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) workers were not allowed to leave until a resolution was in place.

The group demanded that the state-owned company normalize the power service, which has failed on several occasions in recent days. Residents said their tactic was a pressure measure to get the company to resolve the issue.

The incident happened when the two CFE workers arrived at the Port of Chiquilá to check on connections. While there, they were briefly detained by the angry residents who said they had experienced blackouts all week.

Chiquilá Mayor Joel Pino Álvarez said that they have been suffering from poor service for a week, in particular, at night. The nighttime outages have left residents frustrated due to the high temperatures.

The two CFE workers were held for about three hours then released, but without their company vehicle, which is still in the community’s possession.

Residents said that the vehicle will remain impounded until the CFE guarantees stable service in the area.
