Environmental officers seize found howler monkey kept inside private home

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — The Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection rescued an adult howler monkey. The animal was removed from inside a private home where it was found tied without food, water or shelter.

The monkey was removed from the home due to a complaint received in April regarding its inhumane conditions.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) seized a specimen of howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) that was tied up inside a home in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.

The monkey was provided with medical treatment for injuries June 13, 2026.

“In response to a complaint received in April, reporting the presence of a howler monkey in a home, tied to a block without being able to move and in terrible conditions, Profepa personnel carried out a wildlife inspection visit to the site,” they reported Saturday.

At the site, the monkey was found tied to a cinder block with a harness without any shelter from the sun or rain. During the inspection, no water dish or food container was observed for the animal.

According to the information provided by the person inspected, the specimen was taken from its habitat after being found by a sugarcane worker in a field with wounds and possible mange.

It was taken to the home for recovery.

“The conditions in which the primate was found constitute a lack of dignified and respectful treatment in accordance with Chapter VI of the General Wildlife Law, and the specimen was seized,” the agency said.
