Cancun, Q.R. — Five people were seriously injured after an out-of-control jet ski hit them while swimming Sunday evening. Swarms of emergency personnel rushed to the the scene of the accident at Playa Gaviota Azul in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Authorities were made aware of the accident by beachgoers who watched as the speeding jet ski became airborne and landed on a group of swimmers. Cancun Civil Protection personnel were some of the first emergency responders to the numerous 6:50 p.m. reports of the accident.
“Following an incident in the swimming area of Playa Gaviota Azul where a jet ski was improperly operated, Cancun Civil Protection personnel and lifeguards provided immediate assistance to several injured individuals,” Cancun Civil Protection said late Sunday.

“The response was coordinated with our emergency units and with the support of the Hyatt Ziva hotel, prioritizing timely care and the well-being of those affected.
“We reiterate our commitment to the safety of residents and visitors; furthermore, Tourist Police officers arrested those allegedly responsible for these events,” Protección Civil Cancún posted on social media.
According to early information, the operator of the jet ski was speeding when the vehicle suddenly launched out of the water and struck swimmers near the shore. At least five people were hit by the jet ski as it landed.
According to data provided by Antonio Riveroll, the Director of Cancun Civil Protection, the accident resulted five people injured. One minor sustained serious injuries and is reported to be in critical condition.

All five injured were transported to different hospital in the city of Cancun. Municipal police and maritime authorities cordoned off the area to collect evidence as the start into an official investigation.

Personnel from the Port Authority also arrived at the scene Sunday night to issue fines to those responsible for operating the jet skis.
