Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun construction worker was killed Tuesday night during a hotel renovation accident. While pouring a concrete slab, the poorly constructed slab collapsed, killing a worker.
City authorities were notified of the accident around 8:30 p.m. in an area of the Hotel Riu. At the scene they located 36 year old Irving “N” unconsciousness. Paramedics rushed the him to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

State Civil Protection said late Tuesday “regarding the incident this evening at a construction site located at a hotel on Kukulcán Boulevard, a report was received of an incident at a construction site located at a hotel on Kukulcán Boulevard in Cancún.
“As a result of this incident, one person was treated by paramedics and transported to a private hospital, where, unfortunately, upon arrival, they no longer had vital signs. No other injuries were reported.
“Firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, Public Security officers, and ministerial authorities promptly arrived at the scene and carried out the corresponding procedures.
“It is reported that the construction area was closed for safety reasons; the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was also notified to conduct the corresponding investigations and determine responsibility.”
According to Joaquín Marrufo, the Operational Coordinator of Civil Protection, two men were pouring a 10 by six meter concrete slab. The structure was poorly constructed and collapsed.

Both construction workers fell to the ground below with the wet concrete. One died. The second worker was not seriously injured.
Cancun Civil Protection have since closed the construction site pending their investigation.
