Cruise ship passenger transferred to private Cancun hospital during medical evacuation

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Mexican Navy performed the medical evacuation of a cruise ship passenger Monday night. The passenger, a 50 year old man, was diagnosed as suffering from appendicitis.

Marina personnel from the Fifth Naval Region off Isla Mujeres reported on the evacuation.

“This action was carried out after receiving an emergency call from a cruise ship requesting assistance for a 50-year-old man suffering from appendicitis,” they said.

The Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) of Isla Mujeres was ordered to immediately deploy a Defender-class vessel with specialized naval medical personnel on board.

Marina personnel transferred the cruise ship passenger to the mainland at Puerto Juarez where an ambulance was waiting. From there, he was transferred to a private hospital in Cancun.

“Upon arriving at the scene of the emergency, the individual was assessed and medically evacuated.

“He was then transported to Puerto Juárez where a private ambulance met them and took him to a hospital for further specialized medical care.”
