Criminal group members charged with extorting Tulum hotel zone restaurant

Tulum, Q.R. — Six men have been charged with extorting a Tulum hotel zone restaurant every month since the start of the year. The six were formally charged Wednesday after being picked up on outstanding arrest warrants.

Pedro Enrique “N”, Heberto “N”, Tomás “N”, Tiburcio “N”, Manuel Alejandro “N” and Alexander “N”, were taken into custody by elements of the Investigative Police assigned to Combating Crimes of Kidnapping and Extortion.

All six have been charged “for their alleged relationship in events that could constitute the crime of extortion to the detriment of a commercial establishment in the restaurant sector located in Tulum,” the State Attorney General (FGE) reported.

“The events for which they are accused occurred on several occasions starting at the beginning of this year, when they showed up at the restaurant located on the Tulum-Boca Paila coastal highway where they intimidated the employees by demanding the amount of 30,000 pesos per month for “floor rights”, under the threat that if they did not pay they would attack the place with bullets.”

According to the FGE, the last payment was collected August 31 of this year when the group of six were finally arrested. The FGE says the six are part of a criminal group known to sell narcotics and extort businesses in the Tulum area. A judge has ordered all six to remain imprisoned during their trials.
