Cozumel pays tribute to captains lost at sea already this year

Cozumel, Q.R. — Local authorities paid tribute to several islanders who lost their lives at sea this year. On Saturday, an at-sea memorial was held for four Cozumel captains who have died already this year.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Mayor José Luis Chacón led the Men Fallen from the Sea ceremony. The ceremony was held to honor the memory of Cozumel residents who died this year dedicating their lives to maritime activities.

During the tribute, Governor Lezama recognized captains and seamen widely recognized in the community. Those recognized included Captain Don Payo Flores, Captain Leo, Captain Cocono and Captain Babucha, whose names are part of Cozumel’s maritime history for their career, effort and legacy within the fishing and nautical sector.

The ceremony was also extended to all those who lost their lives at sea “from different jobs related to fishing, nautical tourism and navigation, which contributed to the development of the island,” Lezama said.
