Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Cool temperatures are forecast to stick around for the remainder of the week. According to State Civil Protection, “the influx of humid air from the Caribbean Sea towards the Yucatan Peninsula will keep the sky over the state of Quintana Roo partially cloudy with increasing cloudiness during the day, rain with intervals of showers.
“A hot environment will continue during the day and mild to cool at night and dawn. Wind with gusts of 40 kms/h mainly on the coasts of the state,” they reported Monday.
The municipality of Tulum continues to be the cold spot in the state with the arrival of Cold Front 10. The front, which arrived in northern Mexico Tuesday, reached the Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday afternoon.
The front, a mass of U.S. arctic air, caused a significant temperature drop around the Peninsula especially during the nighttime hours. Residents around the state continue to wake up to below normal temperatures due to the cold air, which according to the SMN (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional), was forecast to move off by last weekend.
While there has been a slight recovery in temperatures, the cold air continues to linger. Since the cold air arrived last week, wakeup temperatures have only improved by about four degrees.
The municipality of Tulum, who recorded 13C, 14C and 15C (59F) Thursday morning, the coldest in the state, have only increased their wakeup temperature to a humid 19C (66F).
More cool air is in store for the region. According to Dirección General de Proteccion Civil Tulum, “start of the week is with a cool morning, heat in the afternoon, and again cool nighttime, especially at dawn tomorrow.
“The cool nighttime and dawn environment is expected to continue this week, so it is recommended to continue taking the necessary precautions with the temperature changes between day and night.”
On Monday, the SNM reported “for the Yucatan Peninsula, partly cloudy skies and a mild atmosphere are forecast for the morning. In the afternoon, a warm atmosphere with partly cloudy to cloudy skies, as well as easterly and northeasterly winds of 10 to 25 kms/h in the region, and with gusts of up to 45 kms/h in coastal areas.”
State Civil Protection (Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil QRoo) has issued a continued cool air advisory, warning residents to dress warm since it is the winter season.
