Concrete boom truck leaves Riviera Maya highway creating backed up traffic

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Southbound highway traffic was backed up in the Punta Venado area of the federal 307 south of Playa del Carmen Saturday. Authorities temporarily shut the road after an industrial vehicle was driven off the highway and into thick brush.

Although the vehicle completely left the highway, emergency services, including an industrial sized tow truck, stopped southbound traffic to deal with the situation.

The accident happened around 7:00 a.m. approximately 18 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen. The concrete boom truck is reported to have suffered a mechanical failure that forced the driver to leave the road.

The vehicle was heading toward the town of Tulum when, according to the driver, he started to take a corner realizing he had no breaks. He said after an attempt to slow the unit, he intentionally drove it into the brush after the vehicle failed to lose speed while still on the highway.

National Guard Highways were part of the responding team of emergency services Saturday morning. The driver of the boom truck was not hurt. Due to the complexity of the stuck truck, the highway was shut while responders removed it from the brush.
