Conapesca seizes more than 86 tons of poached fish in first six weeks of year

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) says they have seized more than 86 tons of illegal fishing products. The illegal catches have been made in 17 states since the start of the year.

In coordination with the Navy, Conapesca personnel carried out 850 inspections of which 203 were found with illegal catches. The inspections were made from January 1 to February 15, 2025.

During those six weeks, “the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through Conapesca and the Marina, reported on the retention of 86 tons 600 kilos of illegal fishery products in 17 entities,” the federal agency reported.

The Comisión Nacional de Acuacultura y Pesca (Conapesca) says they have also carried out 1,454 land surveys, 268 checkpoints and 168 prevention talks aimed at fishery workers.

With the support of Marina personnel, Conapesca says they strengthen the fight against illegal fishing and promotes the sustainability of the fishing sector through permanent inspection and surveillance operations and tours on the Mexican coasts.

In January, Federal officials seized an Isla Mujeres fishing vessel and the crew’s catch for poaching. The crew were caught fishing illegally by inspectors from the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca).

During that inspection, federal officials reporting seizing 2,000 kilos of illegally caught grouper.
