Cold front 21 arrives with rain and strong wind gusts

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Heavy rain left several parts of Quintana Roo waterlogged Monday with the arrival of a cold front. Front number 21 began to approach the Yucatan Peninsula early in the day creating strong winds and heavy rain.

According to State Civil Protection, Cold Front 21 is currently extended over the Yucatan Peninsula, causing partly cloudy to cloudy skies over the state of Quintana Roo. The front will continue to create showers and intervals of rain over some areas of the state.

Daytime temperatures will be affected with a slight dip while nighttime air will be even cooler due to the arrival of the cold air. Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil also reported on “winds with gusts of 40 to 50 km/h mainly along the state’s coasts.”

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), for today, cold front No. 21will extend over the Yucatan Peninsula, causing heavy rains in Tamaulipas, Campeche and Quintana Roo and showers in Nuevo Leon, Hidalgo, Puebla and Yucatan.

The arctic air mass associated with the front will cause a “norte” event with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h in the isthmus and gulf of Tehuantepec and gusts of 30 to 50 km/h in Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

In turn, a drop in temperature is expected in southeastern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Daytime temperatures for Cancun and Riviera Maya will hover around 27c (80F), while nighttime temperatures are forecast to dip to around 17C (60F).

According to the current forecast by the SMN, the mass of cold air is expected to leave the Yucatan Peninsula for the weekend.
