Civil Protection stops operation of LP gas truck found traveling Cancun streets with leak

Cancun, Q.R. — Municipal Civil Protection placed a closure seal on an LP gas truck traveling Cancun roads Tuesday. The truck was tracked down by Municipal de Protección Civil personnel after a citizen report of a gas leak.

The incident happened shortly before 5:00 p.m. when Municipal Civil Protection confirmed the Tomza company gas truck was driving city streets with a leak. The vehicle was located traveling Los Tules Avenue in SM 248 of the Villas del Mar subdivision.

Authorities stopped and inspected the truck, confirming a leak in its hose system. According to Civil Protection, the leak originated in the hose located at the bottom of the vehicle which rubbed against the cardan shaft, causing the gas to leak.

For that reason, municipal officials proceeded to close the truck and prevent it from further transporting with its load of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

When safety protocols were activated, authorities from the Fire Department, Civil Protection and Municipal and State Police immediately closed the shutoff valves. As part of protocol, traffic was closed at the intersection of Los Tules and Kabah avenues until the gas leak was deemed controlled.

Area residents videoed the damaged truck driving along the street Tuesday.

Authorities reported that no injuries were recorded and that as a precautionary measure, the truck was closed from operating and placed under guard. They also reported that the company will be fined in accordance with current regulations and that in a separate visit, all their vehicles will be inspected.
