Civil Protection issues heavy rain alert from Cancun to Tulum

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — State Civil Protection has issued a heavy rain alert for a majority of the state of Quintana Roo. According to authorities, heavy thunderstorms are expected to start up again in coming hours.

“Get ready! In the next three hours, heavy rains, electrical discharges and wind gusts of up to 60 kms/h are forecast in several areas of the state. Affected municipalities include Cozumel, Solidaridad, Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Puerto Morelos, Benito Juarez, Lazaro Cardenas, Isla Mujeres and Jose Maria Morelos.”

According to Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo, nine of the state’s 11 municipalities will be affected. Only the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas and Othón P. Blanco will not be affected by the approach of tropical wave 30.

Recommendations, they say, include staying in a safe place, staying informed and attentive to the instructions of authorities and to avoiding going out if not necessary.

According to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), a low pressure channel over the southeast and the approach of tropical wave 30 over the Yucatan Peninsula are expected to cause intense rainfall (75 to 150 millimeters) in Quintana Roo and Yucatan.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN), says additionally, northerly winds are expected with gusts of 30 to 50 kms/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec and gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan.

Because strong winds could knock down trees and advertising signs, as well as create high waves, the population and maritime navigation are urged to heed the warnings of the SMN and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.

Overnight, heavy thunderstorms left the state soaked due to the low pressure channel. According to the SMN, above normal rainfall has been recorded around the state in recent days. Over the last 24 hours, the hardest hit was Banco Chinchorro, Othón P. Blanco with 40 mms of rain.
