Cancun, Q.R. — Rain that began in Cancun early Thursday resulted in at least nine traffic accidents. City Transit scrambled to keep up with the reports of vehicle crashes and overturns along busy roadways.

A majority of the accidents reported Thursday morning were along Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard. According to Transit, seven of the nine accidents attended to by their Traffic Department personnel occurred on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard.
Of those seven accidents, four people were left with injuries. City property damage was also recorded in excess of 500,000 pesos in infrastructure damage such as downed signs, felled light poles and broken curbs.
According to the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT), five accidents were reported on the lanes leading from Playa del Carmen to Cancun on that same boulevard. Cancun traffic personnel also responded to two other accidents on the lanes from downtown Cancun toward the city’s international airport.

One of them happened on Kabah Avenue at the intersection with Niños Héroes when the driver of a Volkswagen Pointer collided with the rear of a Nissan pickup truck as the front driver slowed down.
The second was also a rear-end, this time on Andrés Quintana Roo Avenue. No injuries were reported. Instead of an ambulance, insurance companies were called to sort out responsibility.

Traffic around Cancun was heavily effected by the ongoing inner city vehicle accidents. City police noted that recent rains led to hazardous road conditions including decreased tire traction, increased braking distance and reduced visibility, all of which increased the risk of skidding and collisions.

The SMSCyT reported that the main cause of the accidents was excessive speed on wet pavement which resulted in driver’s losing control, skidding and hitting other vehicles, road signs and city curbs.
