City of Chetumal starts operational testing of first Mexican made electric bus

Chetumal, Q.R. — Operational testing has begun in the state’s capital city of Chetumal as part of the public transportation service project. The testing began Tuesday with the presentation of the Taruk bus by Governor Mara Lezama.

The bus, which is 100% electric and manufactured in Mexico, will undergo operational testing to provide public transportation service in the city. The operation was announced with the director of the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), Rafael Hernández Kotasek, who reported that the demonstration unit will undergo operational testing from October 6 to 11 on the two pilot routes.

Those routes will include Caribe and Sian Ka’an, and will be integrated into daily operations so that passengers can board and evaluate it. On October 10 and 11, testing will continue on new routes, but without passengers.

The Director of Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) added that the goal is to evaluate the bus’s actual performance in everyday scenarios, considering its technical, operational, energy and economic performance, as well as the user experience.

Measuring 9.5 meters in length and with a total capacity for 60 passengers (28 seated) and with wheelchair spaces, the vehicle combines a compact urban design with a range of up to 350 kilometers, enough to cover complete routes without the need for frequent recharging.

Its 100 kW electric motor offers efficient and quiet performance, eliminating polluting emissions during operation and thus contributing to improving air quality in the city.

Governor Lezama stated that the Taruk represents a step forward in national technological sovereignty, as it is an electric vehicle designed, produced and patented in Mexico with the support of Megaflux, Conahcyt and the UNAM School of Engineering. It also represents job creation for Mexicans.
