Cancun, Q.R. — The city of Cancun is looking to restructure dozens of its inner-city bus routes. The restructuring is part of the state’s new Mobi mobility project announced earlier this year.
So far, 87 public transport routes around Cancun have been selected as part of the restructuring process. City and state officials are working together to restructure those routes by expanding coverage to improve service.
Héctor Sánchez Tirado, the General Director of the Municipal Planning Institute, reported that there are around 133,000 people without nearby public transportation access.
He explained that although 85 percent of Cancun residents have a route within 300 meters of their home, there are still areas without coverage.
Areas with the greatest need for improved service include the southern polygon, as well as Huayacán and Bonampak Avenues.
The city’s goal is to gradually implement the Mobi system by prioritizing corridors with the highest demand. Among the considered are busy avenues such as Portillo, Kabah, Kukulcán, Luis Donaldo Colosio, Nichupté and Chac Mool.
Sánchez Tirado explained that all routes that run through these corridors are being reviewed to undergo modifications to improve the operation of the system and reduce public vehicle saturation.
The new system will see major changes to the state’s public transportation including planned routes, greater coverage, the use of electronic payment systems and the elimination of the Transit Officer position.
