Chetumal looking to install additional security cameras

Chetumal, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) says additional security cameras are needed around the city of Chetumal. Currently there are 80 security cameras in operation in busy areas, however, more are needed.

Fernando Viveros Hernández, the Undersecretary of the SSC, acknowledged that this amount is not sufficient to carry out accurate and effective monitoring. He says additional equipment is needed since they have detected several angles considered “blind spots” that are beyond the reach of authorities.

“There are blind spots. There are streets where we would need more cameras, so we have to work on the budget and on this project. From what the Director of the C5 told me, there are some places where there is no surveillance like part of the main Boulevard, which for various technical reasons, could not be installed.

“The project is there, it is within the secretary’s objectives to be able to install more cameras in Chetumal to have better surveillance and prevent criminal acts,” he explained.

He emphasized that there is no specific date for the acquisition of the devices, he said they are working to determine the amount of resources needed and also where the additional cameras are needed.

Viveros Hernández says the 80 cameras they do have have yielded positive results and helped both the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) in investigations.

“The cameras have been very useful to us, both in investigating certain criminal acts, and also in helping the State Attorney General’s Office, which has requested information from us, so the cameras have been very useful.”

He says the cameras have allowed police to catch criminals red-handed or shortly after a crime. The cameras have also been useful in locating stolen vehicles.

Therefore, with the cameras available and those of the business owners who have joined the call made by the SSC, there is broad coverage of the city, although this coverage is intended to be improved with the installation of more surveillance equipment.
