Chetumal left waterlogged by system crossing over southern Yucatan Peninsula

Chetumal, Q.R. — The state’s capital city of Chetumal was hit Wednesday by a disturbance crossing the peninsula. Tropical wave 22 began crossing the southern portion of the Mexican peninsula Wednesday morning, dumping at least 41 mms of rain by noon.

Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández deployed municipal workers, activing the city’s Operation Storm to clear drains upon the arrival of the system. Rain lasted throughout most of the day leaving some roads inpassable due to flooding.

Some roads were left impassable due to flooding. August 13, 2025.

On Wednesday, the National Hurricane Centre reported on the system saying “a tropical wave over the Yucatan Peninsula is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This disturbance is forecast to move west-northwestward and cross the Yucatan Peninsula today with no significant increase in organization.

City crews unclog flooding streets in Chetumal Wednesday.

“Some development of this system is possible after it emerges across the southwestern Gulf beginning on Thursday while it moves to the northwest at 10 to 15 mph. The system is expected to move inland over northeastern Mexico by late Friday, which should diminish its chances of development.”
