Chetumal, Q.R. — The state’s capital city of Chetumal hosted its first ever national tourism fair. The Adventure Travel Mexico 2024 was inaugurated over the weekend, drawing national tourism interest to promote the southern Mayan region.
Representatives from Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, as well as service providers, tour operators and people linked to tourism attended. Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández, was in the presidium.
At the inauguration of Adventure Travel México (ATMEX) 2024,Governor Mara Lezama stated that it was to promote adventure and nature activities in the south of Quintana Roo.
Governor Lezama pointed out that talking about nature and adventure tourism is not only about taking tourists to these magical and wonderful places that exist.
“Some people think that this is enough, but tourism has much deeper purposes that make it worthy of all our support, and one of them is to generate employment, commercial activities with people, between communities that are often much more remote and, therefore, much poorer,” she said.
Lezama said work is being done with a new model of sustainable tourism development in a New Era of Tourism, precisely to bring the cultural, historical and artisanal wealth of the Mayan communities to the eyes of the world.
The General Director of Promotion and International Affairs of the Secretary of Tourms, Emanuel Román Ernest Rey, highlighted that Quintana Roo, as one of the states that make up the Mayan World, has great potential and a great opportunity to generate multi-destination products.
For this reason, he reported that he is working on the consolidation of the Mayan World, which gives identity as a country and as a region.
“We will work so that this wealth is not only visible, but that it becomes a driver of sustainable development that benefits local communities. With this vision, we continue to promote responsible tourism,” he said.
The State Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto, said that “the diversification strategy promoted by Governor Mara Lezama not only seeks to attract more visitors, but also to preserve and protect the natural environment that surrounds us, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the beauty that we have today.”
