Chetumal gets a head start on hurricane emergency shelter inspections

Chetumal, Q.R. — Chetumal Mayor Yensunni Martínez is getting a head start on the inspection of emergency shelters. The Municipality of Othón P. Blanco began the selection of various schools in the state capital.

These schools will serve as temporary shelters during the upcoming rainy and tropical cyclone season of 2025.

Visits were made to CBTA 11, Guadalupe Victoria Elementary School, CBTIS 253, Armando Escobar Nava Middle School, Primo de Verdad Elementary School, Eva Samano de López Mateos Elementary School, CBTIS 214, and Francisco I. Madero Elementary School.

In a coordinated effort between the Urban Assistance Subcommittee of the General Directorate of Social Development, Municipal Civil Protection, State Civil Protection Coordination and the Ministry of Education, each building was verified to ensure its operational readiness in the event of a hydrometeorological event.

Last year, the buildings earmarked for emergency hurricane use ended up being used to shelter local residents who were flooded out of their homes. Prior to the official arrival of the Atlantic hurricane season, the southern region experienced ongoing heavy rains that left entire communities under water.
