Chetumal, Q.R. — Government officials say Chetumal will be the first city in the country to run electric made in Mexico buses. The announcement was made Wednesday by Governor Mara Lezama and the Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard who also said Quintana Roo is the first state to join Plan Mexico, a plan to strengthen the local economy.

Governor Lezama emphasized that the decision to purchase the buses locally will provide Chetumal with an environmentally friendly electric public transportation system, while also supporting the national economy and Mexican industries.

Marcelo Ebrard affirmed that this is a very good initiative to strengthen the country’s economy and overcome crises. “Defend our country, support it among ourselves. If you have something made in Mexico, why import it from abroad? Thank you, Mara, for this decision,” he added.

Roberto Gottfriend, the General Director of Potencia Industrial Taruk, said the Taruk buses are electric buses designed and manufactured in Mexico. Their name means “roadrunner” in the Yaqui language.

They are the result of a joint project between the Mexican government, companies such as Megaflux and DINA, and research centers such as Conacyt, UNAM, UAM, and CIATEQ. The Taruk seeks to promote clean mobility and strengthen the national electric transportation industry.

The project to provide Chetumal with a decent and efficient transportation system is an initiative that not only addresses a historical debt of more than a decade without public transportation, but also articulates economic development with the well-being of its citizens.

He added that Quintana Roo will be the first state, and Chetumal the first city, where the Taruk buses will operate, thereby supporting Plan Mexico.
