Chetumal city surveillance used to find people who dump garbage in public spaces

Chetumal, Q.R. — City surveillance cameras are being used to find people who litter around the city of Chetumal. Municipal Police Director Manuel Santibañez reported that thanks to urban monitoring stations, more than 70 people have been caught littering so far this year.

Of those captured, eight were identified by the license plates on their vehicles.

“We’ve used cameras to identify people who commit this offense. We’ve identified eight people with license plates and issued fines. In total, more than 70 people have been fined so far this year,” said Santibañez.

Othón P. Blanco City Council is working with authorities to intensify surveillance against illegal garbage dumping in streets, green areas and vacant lots in Chetumal.

The city’s video surveillance cameras are being used to identify and punish offenders. According to Santibañez, people caught littering are fined 5,000 pesos.

It is common practice for people to toss unwanted items into public spaces and green areas, a practice municipalities are trying to curb.

The municipal government is urging citizens to maintain cleanliness in public spaces and reminds them that littering is a violation punishable by fines.
