Cancun, Q.R. — Two men accused of extorting a Cancun taxi union for protection money have been charged. Local authorities say José Guadalupe “N” and Carlos Iván “N” were charged for extorting the drivers.

According to police, José Guadalupe “N” and Carlos Iván “N” alias “La Momia” and/or “El Gordo”, appeared at the taxi union stand on López Portillo Avenue on May 26 of this year.
They demanded 500 pesos a day from each of the taxi drivers that worked the Puerto Juárez area.
“At that location, they demanded the amount of 500 pesos as payment for “protection money”, an amount that each of the operators who work there had to hand over,” police said.
“They also warned that if they did not hand over the money, they would take their lives,” they added.
In their statement, police said the two men are part of a larger criminal group that generates violence in the municipality.
The presiding Cancun judge also imposed the precautionary measure of preventive detention for a period of two years.
