Cancun, Q.R. — Power has been fully restored in Cancun after a massive substation fire Wednesday morning. Cancun City Hall says they were notified of the fire in SM 96 shortly after 2:00 a.m. that left thousands without electricity.

Following instructions from Mayor Ana Paty Peralta and City Hall Secretary Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, municipal agencies responded to the CFE substation fire.
“The report was received at 2:18 a.m., prompting a coordinated response from the Cancun Fire Department, Civil Protection, Public Safety and Traffic Police, as well as paramedics and support personnel,” City Hall said in a statement Wednesday.
Upon arrival, members of the fire department confirmed a fire in a transformer inside the substation belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
“Fourteen firefighters, supported by specialized operational units, participated in the response, successfully controlling and extinguishing the fire completely,” they added.
The fire, which grew quickly, was located at the Canek substation on Chac Mool Avenue. According to Governor Mara Lezama, power outages were reported in SMs 96, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 200, 216, 259, 517, and 520, affecting approximately 10,000 residents.
Cancun firemen were on scene nearly two hours. Late Wednesday morning, the Federal Electricity Commission reported that engineers fully restored power to the city’s affected areas.

According to their official report, the emergency originated as a result of damage suffered by a power transformer inside the substation, an incident that caused interruptions in the electrical service in various sectors of Cancun and affected thousands of people.
The company stated that after detecting the contingency, specialized personnel deployed immediate and uninterrupted maneuvers to restore electrical power in the shortest possible time.

Although electricity has been normalized in the affected areas, CFE specified that its workers will remain on site carrying out the definitive repairs to the damaged infrastructure, with the aim of fully restoring the operational conditions of the substation.

The Federal Electricity Commission has not yet reported on the official cause of the Wednesday morning fire.
