Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) were seen in central Tulum taking down the clandestine electrical connections. The illegal power hookups were reportedly being used by more than 70 street vendors to power their stalls.

The CFE said these types of illegal connections pose a risk of overloads, power outages, and even fires, in addition to creating financial losses for the company.

The Wednesday operation to dismantle the illegal power connections known as “diablitos”, was carried out by CFE workers from Merida, Yucatan. The illegal connections were operating in one of the busiest areas of the municipality.

There was no comment from CFE personnel as to how so many illegal power lines were allowed to be used in central Tulum without being detected until now.
