Cancun, Q.R. — Two men posing as Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) workers demanding money from customers have been arrested. The pair were reported by a Cancun resident who encountered the men at her home.
The pair, pretending to be CFE employees, were reported to police after several attempts of extortion. Both men are accused of making threats to cut off electrical services if a fee was not paid to them in exchange.
According to police, both men were arrested in Supermanzana 200 in Cancun. In custody are Elmer “N”, 39 and Guillermo “N”, 37. They were arrested by the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) after a citizen reported that both showed up at his home stating that they would disconnect the power supply.
Both men were located wearing official CFE clothing. Neither men were able to prove they worked for the Federal Electricity Commission. Upon their arrests, they were positively identified by their victims.
In a statement, Polica de Cancun said “we received a report of alleged extortion in SM 200 where two individuals pretended to be CFE employees and demanded money to not cut off the service. After being pointed out by the victims, Elmer N, 39 years old, and Guillermo N, 37 years old, were arrested and placed at the disposal of the authorities.”
