Chetumal, Q.R. — Work on a new CAPA line system in central Chetumal remains on hold after a fatal accident earlier this month. The subcontracted company installing the water lines will be able to resume work after legalities are complete.

Víctor Manuel Angulo Canto, Manager of the Drinking Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) in Othón P. Blanco, said they are waiting for the legal department to give the okay.
The installation of new water lines was suspended March 11 after the sides of a trench collapsed, burying several workers, two of whom died. The new lines were being installed along Insurgentes Avenue in central Chetumal.
CAPA and their subcontract company are waiting for the legal okay from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), who continue to investigate the case surrounding the two deaths.
“We are waiting for the Prosecutor’s Office to determine everything that happened there so that work can be reactivated again. The company hired by CAPA will continue with the project.
“It has to be completed after the unfortunate situation that occurred, but it has to be finished. At most we estimate that it will take another week before the work can resume, so that in another month, by the end of April, the work will be finished,” said Angulo Canto.
He explained that the water line replacement project is essential since the existing lines are more than 30 years old. According to Angulo Canto, the lines were crushed and were no longer able to pass wastewater from the houses.

A temporary pipeline system has been installed above ground while both companies wait for the legal go-ahead to finish replacing the in-ground lines. The project was several weeks into its progress when the accident happened.
