CAPA employees involved in multi-million peso embezzlement scheme dismissed

Chetumal, Q.R. — Four employees of the Potable Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) being investigated for embezzlement have been dismissed. The four employees are currently being investigated for embezzling 22 million pesos.

Hugo Garza Sáenz, the General Directorate of CAPA (Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado), said the four employees, who have not been named, have been removed from their positions while they undergo legal proceedings.

Garza Sáenz says it is possible there are other employees involved in the embezzlment and is something they are looking into, however, he also said CAPA is keeping public details minimal so as not to alert others who may be involved.

He says an in depth investigation is currently underway by state officials after a CAPA building search in November. According to Garza Sáenz, agents of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption (FCC) carried out a search of the state-owned company’s Chetumal facilities on November 22.

The suspects, he explained, are three CAPA employees who allegedly took funds and invested them in cryptocurrencies. Another employee, assigned to the Directorate of Debt Recovery and Tax Enforcement (DRAEF), was also indicted for allegedly diverting funds by formalizing false debt settlement agreements.
