Cancun’s Nichupté bridge project now over budget at more than 7 billion pesos

Cancun, Q.R. — The cost to construct the Nichupté vehicular bridge in Cancun has seen an increase of more than 1.4 billion pesos.

Although the physical progress of the work is barely 14 percent complete, more than 1.7 million pesos has already been spent on its construction. According to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), Jorge Nuño, the cost of the bridge has increased from just over 5.5 billion pesos to more than 7 billion.

Construction for the much-needed city lagoon overpass began in August of 2022. At the time, the total cost was estimated at 5.5 billion, a cost that increased to over 7 billion as of April 2023.

The updated costs were revealed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador during a morning press conference who reported the figures from a progress report by the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT).

The firm Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) won the contract to construct the lagoon overpass after bidding just over 5.5 billion to complete the project. ICA was awarded the contract for coming in under the federal budget of 5.8 billion. Nine months into building, ICA now says the bridge will cost slightly more than 7 billion to build.

The bridge is set to be a four lane urban roadway with a total length of 8.80 kilometers that will connect the Cancun Hotel Zone with the mainland over the Nichupté lagoon system.

The Nichupté vehicular bridge is part of a package of four Cancun road projects among which is the rehabilitation of Colosio Boulevard, the reconstruction of the Airport Distributor and the expansion of Chac Mool Avenue.
