Cancun, Q.R. — Nearby surveillance cameras captured two men being swept out to sea Sunday in Cancun. One of the men died by drowning, while the second was rushed to hospital.

A 41 year old man died by drowning after being dragged out by strong rip currents.

The two separate incidents both happened on Playa Gaviota Azul in the Cancun Hotel Zone Sunday afternoon. Tourist Police, along with Civil Protection rescue and paramedics, responded to the emergency reports of possible drownings.

Both men were swept out separately by the strong rip current at the same time. Both men were pulled from the water and returned to the sand. One man, identified as 41 year old José “N” from Chiapas, was rescued with very weak vital signs but died on the beach.

Nearby hotel security footage captured the Sunday afternoon incident.

The second swimmer was pulled from the same rip current on Playa Gaviota Azul at the same time. He was rushed to Jesús Kumate Rodríguez Hospital in critical condition. It is not known if the men were visitors or local residents.

Personnel removed the body of the deceased from the beach Sunday.

Witnesses claimed both men were consuming alcoholic beverages on the beach before heading into the choppy sea. Authorities are investigating if alcohol played a factor in either of the accidents.
