Cancun police return fire during early morning chase through city streets

Cancun, Q.R. — Police responding to a report of armed men were forced to return fire after being shot at. Early Thursday morning, Cancun police were alerted to armed men traveling city streets in two vehicles.

Early reports say one of the vehicles, a black SUV, was reported stolen by subjects in a white SUV. The driver of the black SUV was intercepted on a city street and carjacked. Both vehicles then sped off.

Police were made aware of the stolen SUV, which was located by patrolling officers around 1:00 a.m. while being monitored from the C5 centre security cameras. Once found, a chase ensued that resulted in officers being shot at.

Police returned fire.

The two vehicles were chased by authorities along Huayacán, Prolongación Chac Mool, Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio and Avenida Rogelio Castorena, a dirt road.

However, once on the dirt road, the police cruiser crashed, allowing the drivers of the SUVs to escape. The drivers continued on and were able to get away. Both vehicles were later found abandoned in the Bonfil, just outside the city of Cancun.

Inside the abandoned vehicles police found guns, tactical gear, drugs, tire spikes and ammunition. There are reports that they also found traces of blood, indicating at least one of the subjects had been shot.

The vehicles were found in Bonfil January 15, 2026.

On Friday, police reported that “during the early morning of January 15, following a report to 911 regarding the presence of armed individuals in Suburban-type vehicles, an operation was deployed in Superblock 308.

“During the intervention, a chase ensued in which the drivers of the vehicles fired shots, however, as a result of the operation, two Suburban-type trucks were seized, one black and one white.

“Inside the vehicles, authorities found long guns, magazines, live ammunition, ballistic and tactical vests, a substance resembling drugs, and metal devices known as tire spikes. One of the vehicles had been reported stolen.

“The vehicles and evidence seized were placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which initiated the corresponding investigation to locate those responsible.”
