Cancun lifeguards save local swimmer dragged by rip current from drowning

Cancun, Q.R. — Lifeguards in Cancun were able to rescue a swimmer dragged out by a strong rip current. On-duty lifeguards noticed the man struggling in the water off Playa Delfines Sunday afternoon.

The man had reportedly been drinking on the beach when he attempted to go for a swim. Within minutes of going into the water, he started to be dragged from the shore by currents.

Lifeguards saw him struggling and were able to bring him back to the sand. According to Cancun Civil Protection, the man reported being only tired and did not require a hospital transfer.

“Our lifeguards carried out a water rescue operation at Playa Delfines after a visitor was swept away by a rip current,” Protección Civil Cancún reported.

“Upon detecting the situation, the water rescue protocol was immediately activated, and the individual was brought to safety using a rescue surfboard. After being assessed by our staff, the person reported fatigue from the exertion in the water and was otherwise unharmed.

“We remind the public and visitors to respect the instructions of the lifeguards, avoid entering the sea under the influence of alcohol, and remain attentive to sea conditions to prevent incidents.

“We continue working to protect the safety of those who enjoy our beaches.”
