Cancun lifeguards rescue three swept out by strong rip currents despite ‘multiple warnings’

Cancun, Q.R. — Three people were saved from drowning Tuesday after being rescued by Cancun lifeguards. Three women dragged out to sea yesterday afternoon by a strong rip current were returned to shore by two lifeguards.

The incident happened around 4:00 p.m. in water off Playa Delfines where the women entered to sea to swim. Cancun Civil Protection said they went into the water despite “multiple preventative warnings” from lifeguards.

Within a few minutes, all three began to be dragged out into deeper water by the current.

Cancun Civil Protection, the agency that heads city lifeguards, said the women were rescued with assistance from firemen and suffered only exhaustion.

“Multiple Rescue at Playa Delfines: Our staff from the Department of Aquatic Safety and Rescue rescued three women at Playa Delfines who were caught in a rip current,” Protección Civil Cancun reported.

“Thanks to the prompt intervention of our lifeguards and the coordinated work with firefighters, they were brought to safety; they only suffered from exhaustion and did not require medical transport.

“It should be noted that multiple preventative warnings had been issued for the area beforehand. We reiterate our call to respect the safety recommendations and flags on our beaches.”
