Cancun International improving tourist experiences: Customs, immigration and transportation priority issues

Cancun, Q.R. — Work continues on improving tourist experiences at the Cancun International Airport. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama led a meeting Wednesday to follow up on priority issue progress.

Talks were had during the Eighth Working Meeting with state and federal authorities and the Southeast Airport Group (ASUR), the company that manages the Cancun airport.

All sides met to follow up on priority issues in customs, immigration, transportation and security of the state’s busy international airport.

During the meeting, the governor highlighted progress made including agreements with customs authorities to eliminate fees for passengers entering the country with more than one electronic device.

Agreements have also been reached regarding the standardization of procedures for importing cigarettes.

Governor Lezama led the meeting Wednesday. December 17, 2025.

Additionally, issues related to transportation companies operating outside the airport were resolved following the formalization of contracts with ASUR.

Regarding immigration, Governor Lezama explained that the maximum waiting time has been reduced to 24 minutes, and that in high seasons, those wait times will not exceed 30 minutes.

The immigration wait times have been reduced thanks to the hiring of more staff and the planned installation of additional E-gates. According to Lezama, another 20 E-gates will be installed inside the Cancun airport next year.

Governor Lezama also addressed the proposal to establish clear and orderly transportation rates from the airport, a proposal that will be detailed in upcoming working sessions.

An additional 20 E-gates will be added to Cancun International during 2026.

In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in which Quintana Roo will host two national teams, plans were reviewed to accommodate a larger number of visitors, reinforcing security, mobility and the tourist experience.

Governor Lezama emphasized the inter-institutional coordination with the National Guard, Army, Migration, Customs, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Citizen Security, as well as with organizations such as CPTQ, ASUR and civil and business associations, to guarantee comprehensive attention during the holiday season and international events.

The goal, she said, is for those arriving at the Cancun International Airport to have a positive immigration, customs and transportation experience, consolidating the country’s main airport for international passenger arrivals as a benchmark of quality and service.
