Cancun inspectors close property for illegally clearing trees

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities in Cancun shut access to a property in SM 93 after it was found illegally cleared. Heavy machinery was used to clear the large section of land last week.

Residents who live around the section of now-cleared land filed a complaint with city officials. On Thursday, they held a small protest that lead to officials arriving to verify the project Friday.

In a statement, Cancun City Hall reported visiting the site Friday morning and verifying that the clearing was done illegally.

During the inspection, a woman who claimed to be the owner was reported telling officials that she ‘had the right to do whatever she wanted with her property.’ When asked for the change of land use permits, she was unable to produce them.

City inspectors proceeded to close the property after she was found in violation of city regulations.

“Following a report from residents of SM 93 regarding unauthorized tree felling in a green area, personnel from the General Directorate of Ecology immediately went to the site to conduct an inspection.

“Upon confirming that the property lacked the necessary permits, CLOSURE seals were applied to ensure compliance with current environmental regulations. REPORT IT! If you witness a similar case, call 998 881 2800 ext. 3100.

“In Cancún, respect for our green spaces and the peace and quiet of families is a priority,” Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez posted.
