Cancun, Q.R. — A chemical reaction had Cancun firemen at a building in the hotel zone Sunday morning. Authorities say the incident was the result of a chemical reaction between two incompatible substances.
Authorities arrived to a smoke-filled underground parkade where the chemicals were stored. According to the fire department, the incident happened at a hotel on Boulevard Kukulcán early Sunday morning.

Firemen received a hazardous materials incident report due to a flame that released irritating fumes. Firemen were able to secure the area and ventilate the parking garage.
There were no injuries reported. Authorities say training and proper handling of chemical substances is important to avoid incidents.
In a brief statement, the Cancun Fire Department said “early Sunday morning, Cancun Fire Department personnel responded to an incident at a hotel located at kilometer 14.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán.
“The incident stemmed from a chemical reaction between incompatible substances, which resulted in a small flame and the release of irritating fumes.
“Upon arrival, a safety perimeter was established, and using personal protective equipment and respiratory protection, the necessary procedures were carried out to safely control the situation, preventing further risks.
“In coordination with the hotel’s internal emergency response team and maintenance personnel, ventilation and mitigation of associated hazards were performed, ensuring safe conditions for occupants and staff.
“No injuries or cases of intoxication were reported. No medical transport was required. The incident was brought under control without major impact.

“We recognize the importance of training and proper handling of chemical substances to prevent these types of emergencies.”
