Cancun awarded 49 Blue Flag distinctions for 2025-2026 season

Cancun, Q.R. — A total of 49 Blue Flags have been issued across the city of Cancun. On Wednesday, Governor Mara Lezama along with Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, led the Blue Flag Raising Ceremony for the 2025-2026 Season.

The 49 Blue Flag certificates were presented by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). During the Wednesday ceremony, 47 certificates were renewed and two others added for a total of 49.

Joaquín Arturo Díaz Ríos, the Executive Director of FEE Mexico, presented Governor Lezama and Mayor Peralta with the certificates. The certificates included beaches Del Niño, Perlas, Chacmool, Marlin, Ballenas, Playa Delfines and Playa Coral. Four hotels, Fiesta Americana Condesa, Live Aqua, Iberostar and Flamingo, were also awarded.

Cancún Sailing received 38 awards for the same number of FEE certified boats, including two more this season.

Mayor Peralta said Cancun has earned First Place Nationally with Blue Flag sites and First Place Internationally with vessels bearing that award.

The Blue Flag is an international award granted annually by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches, marinas and vessels that meet 33 criteria in four categories: environmental education, water quality, environmental management and safety and services.

Governor Lezama said these Blue Flags are a symbol around the world that reaffirms Mexico’s commitment not only to tourists, but also to the environment.

“But it’s also a recognition of those who make its care possible, the wonderful people at Zofemat, Municipal Public Services, Civil Protection, and the business owners who work 24/7.

“Every blue flag that flies is the work of many hands, of skin that has been exposed to the sun’s rays, of an unwavering passion and only in this way, only in this way can we maintain these awards and today this benchmark not only nationally but internationally,” said the Governor.

Mara Lezama also invited everyone to take care of the natural beauty of the beaches, to avoid littering, cigarette butts, and microplastics, in order to preserve them and protect the environment. She also congratulated Ana Paty Peralta’s leadership not only for confirming the number of awards, but for increasing them further because when records are broken in this area, it means we are on the right path.

Mayor Peralta affirmed that Cancun is the first in the nation to officially begin raising the Blue Flag, the result of the work of an entire team with perseverance and commitment from many hands, “many hearts that deeply love this place, a reflection of the commitment we have to our home, to Mexico’s leading tourist destination and where we have the privilege of living.”

Previously, Joaquín Arturo Díaz Ríos, executive director of FEE México, stated that there is no municipality in all of Latin America, in all of the Americas, that has a greater number of Blue Flags, “and that is something we have to applaud.”
