Beachfront property owners could foot chunk of cost to install sargassum barriers off Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — Seaside residents of Puerto Aventuras are hoping to install floating barriers to block incoming sargassum. The 6.6 million peso project could prevent seaweed from washing ashore along their beaches.

The Puerto Aventuras Residents Association is proposing investing 6.6 million pesos in three floating barriers. The project includes nearly 900 meters of floating barriers that would be installed across Bahía de Fátima.

The project also includes placing two smaller barriers in front of Club de Yates and Laguna Kantenah.

The proposal, which still needs to be voted on, is in response to a recent internal survey. Approximately 80 percent of survey participants reported negative affects regarding the sargassum, including a decline in vacation rental property bookings.

The possible installation of floating barriers is the result of the Sargassum Committee created by the Association who were headed to provide a solution.

If installed, the Committee has proposed that 30% of the cost be covered by beachfront property owners.

According to the Association, approximately two million pesos was spent during the 2025 sargassum season to remove seaweed from the Puerto Aventuras beach areas.

The floating barriers have a lifespan of around seven years. Association members will analyze the project for a March vote that may be moved up to February due to the early arrival of the seaweed.
