Beaches and navigation fully reopened in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Raúl Guadarrama García, Municipal Secretary of Sustainable Tourism of Puerto Morelos, says the municipality is up and running. After a weekend of cleanup, tourist activities have returned to normal.

He says nearly 15,000 national and international tourists stayed in Puerto Morelos during the passing of Hurricane Beryl. “Thanks to the preventive measures and security protocols that were applied in a timely manner in coordination with other agencies, there were no incidences reported and today, the activity practically returned to normal,” he said.

Guadarrama García explained that there was constant contact with consulates and embassies and although there were evacuation plans and routes, it was not necessary to apply them because the hurricane did not make a direct hit.

“We had the support of the State Secretariat of Tourism at all times, which, through its head, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, provided us with all the help we needed. He was even the one who notified us of the activation of the “guest locator” system to help embassies and consulates locate tourists staying in Puerto Morelos, whether in their hotel or in a hostel,” he said.

He also highlighted the support of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, a group with extensive experience in this type of situation, and that of Civil Protection, which facilitated the efforts to obtain a list of spaces contracted by hotels to use as shelters in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, so that consulates and embassies knew at all times where each tourist was.

Guadarrama García drew attention to the fact that many tourists approached the information module installed in the Fundadores Park in the Old Town in the days before Beryl hit to request the location of the hostels.

“Most of them were staying in Airbnb spaces and their hosts did not provide them with that information,” he pointed out.

As weather conditions improved, the beaches of Puerto Morelos were reopened for public use and recreational activities and navigation near the coast were also reactivated.
