Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Central Playa del Carmen beaches have been hit by a large amount of erosion due to the strong winds. The months of March and April are known to be windy, however, June has also turned out to be a month of strong gusts.
Lourdes Varguez, the Solidaridad Secretary of the Environment, reported on the beach erosion as a result of the strong winds and waves. She says the erosion has been ongoing since its season has been lengthened, affecting the majority of central Playa del Carmen beaches.
“The erosion was most in March or April, since which time the tides receded and we had large beaches, but right now we have the entire central area affected,” she said. While winds and waves are expected to calm down in coming days, the continued forecast of storms may result in even more erosion.
Varguez says one of the hardest hit beach areas of central Playa del Carmen has been Mamitas. Stormy waters are now slamming into seaside structures and have completely washed away some once-sandy areas.
The municipality has been working on a long-term project to try and prevent central beach erosion, however, that project is still in an approval phase.
Last month, a central Playa del Carmen hotel installed their own breakwater system to stop the loss of their beach area.
