Central Playa del Carmen hotel installs its own beach barrier

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A central Playa del Carmen hotel has been granted a federal permit for the installation of a breakwater system. The large bags of sand were placed in front of the hotel’s beach area earlier this week.

Federal authorities from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) okay’d the installation of the artificial beach barrier for the Grand Hyatt. The long row of large sand bags have been put into place to help stop beach erosion.

Permits for the anti-erosion project were confirmed by Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, head of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Solidaridad. While the hotel does have permission to have the beach barrier, Ocampo says City Hall was never notified that the hotel made the request.

She says according to information, the hotel submitted the paperwork for the breakwater system in September of 2023. She says he municipality can only make observations about the operation of such structures, which are used to keep sand placed.

In the case of the Hyatt, Ocampo says they are the first to install their own breakwater system in central Playa del Carmen and that the permits for their placement are good for five years.
