Bad wiring blamed for Port of Chiquilá palapa fire

Chiquilá, Q.R. — Bad wiring is being blamed for an early morning fire in the Port of Chiquilá. Local residents were quick to climb the grass topped roof of the Tourist Centre after smoke began to emerge.

Since fire extinguishers were reportedly absent inside the building, residents were able to help control the fire that started in the palapa grass roof of the Centre Sunday morning.

While they climbed the roof with buckets of water, the fire department was called to officially put it out. Firemen from the nearby town of Kantunilkin, 45 kilometers away, were on scene and able to extinguish the small area that had begun to burn.

Only a small area near a light fixture was damaged.

The building itself is part of an ongoing dispute between the state government and the Chiquilá ejido due to its lack of use. The ejido, who have legal possession of the building, are accused by residents of failing to use it and properly maintain it.
