Bacalar, Q.R. — The municipality of Bacalar has opened its first family court lessening the travel burden on residents. Over the weekend, Governor Mara Lezama along with the president of the Superior Court of Justice, Heyden Cebada Rivas, led the inauguration.
The pair led the opening of the first Family Court of First Instance in Bacalar, a court that provides access to justice for thousands of families in the region.
The Governor highlighted that this new judicial body will bring judicial services to the town of Bacalar as well as its 58 municipal communities who previously had to travel to Chetumal to resolve legal matters.
“Today in Bacalar, hand in hand with the judiciary, we are writing a new story, one where justice ceases to be a distant process and becomes a right within everyone’s reach,” said Lezama.
Heyden Cebada Rivas acknowledged the support of the state government in strengthening the judicial infrastructure. He highlighted that this new court will allow for real and dignified access to justice for more than 41,000 residents.

The new court will handle issues related to divorces, alimony, child custody, cohabitation, adoptions, recognition of children and parental authority, among other procedures.
“This court represents effective access to justice with adequate facilities and trained personnel, which will reduce travel, expedite processes and decrease the burden on the courts in Chetumal,” he said.
“In this new government, justice ceases to be a privilege and becomes what it should always have been: a right that is close, humane and accessible to everyone,” Governor Lezama added.
