Bacalar, Q.R. — Boats used on the Bacalar the lagoon will soon be required to have a more environmentally friendly propulsion system. It is one of the measures being implemented to reduce lagoon pollution.
That is according to Guillermo Tun Ruiz, the Eighth District Councilor representing Bacalar. He says as one of the measures to reduce pollution in the Bacalar Lagoon, boats will soon be required to use environmentally friendly outboard motors.
He says oils and their derivatives used in conventional engines can no longer be used especially considering that there are currently more sophisticated alternatives that do not cause damage to marine ecosystems.
Tun Ruiz also mentioned that as part of the new measures, a one-day ban on sailing will also be implemented so that the body of water can settle, which could be considered a rest for life that lives inside the lagoon.
“It is undeniable that aquatic activity alters marine life and not only in terms of pollution,” he said. Other considerations to relive the Bacalar Lagoon from activity stress include a day without navigation, people not entering the lagoon with sunscreen and a way to take better care of stromatolites.
