Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The state’s forest fire season has officially come to and end with a total of 56 fires. The State Fire Management Center in Quintana Roo (CEMF) reported 56 fires during the 2024 season that consumed more than 50,000 hectares.
Óscar Rébora, Secretary of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), said the Centro Estatal de Manejo del Fuego en Quintana Roo (CEMF) reported the number of fires during the 2024 season being 13 more than the 43 recorded last year.
He said the 56 forest fires around Quintana Roo this year burned over 50,000 hectares of mostly shrub areas. The municipality with the most reported fires this year was Bacalar with 23 followed by Othón P. Blanco with nine and José María Morelos with eight.
He said 98 percent of the forest fires fought during 2024 were human related.
“We must remember that forest fires in Mexico are caused almost entirely by human activities, 98 percent, so it is important to call on the population to take measures and prevent this type of incident.”
