Authorities hold press conference on second developing Gulf system

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The National Meteorological Service (SMN) held a press conference Friday in relation to the development of a second low pressure system. The conference was held jointly with the National Water Commission (Conagua) who are part of Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

Conagua reported on the formation of a second system with the potential for cyclonic development as forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NOAA).

According to the NOAA, “a broad low pressure system located over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system as it moves slowly west-northwestward or northwestward, and a tropical depression could form before the system reaches the coast of northeastern Mexico Sunday night.

“Regardless of development, heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding across portions of northeastern Mexico and Deep South Texas through the end of the weekend.”

The second system, which developed on the heels of now-dissipated Tropical Storm Alberto, has brought additional rains to the state.

In the joint Friday press conference, the General Coordinator of the SMN, Alejandra Margarita Méndez Girón and the General Director of Conagua, Germán Arturo Martínez Santoyo, reported that the low pressure system is west of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, moving west-northwest at an approximate speed of 20 kilometers per hour (km/h).

Alejandra Margarita Méndez Girón explained that the interaction of the low pressure with the monsoon trough has been generating more rain in Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla and Hidalgo.

Cloudiness associated with the system will extend to the southeast of Mexico including the Yucatan Peninsula and by Saturday afternoon, the center of the system is expected to be located off the coast of central-northern Veracruz with clouds and rain extending to the Peninsula.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa says the additional rains is expected throughout the state until Monday. In particular, the southern region of Othón P. Blanco is forecast to be hit again, this time with between 50 and 75 millimeters of rain Saturday and another 75 to 150 millimeters Sunday and into Monday.
