Authorities continue search for missing Puerto Morelos drivers after taxis found abandoned

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Police continue their search for two Puerto Morelos taxi drivers reported missing. The men were reported missing March 9 in separate incidences. Police said the Interinstitutional Group located both taxis Tuesday but not the drivers.

Both men were abducted Saturday. On Tuesday, police reported finding both taxis abandoned along Ruta de los Cenotes. Authorities “are continuing a coordinated effort to locate two missing taxi drivers in Puerto Morelos. Through field and technological work, the vehicles driven by the victims were located along the Ruta de los Cenotes,” the FGE said Tuesday.

Authorities have started an investigation into the abduction of the two men who are believed taken by private individuals. Both men are members of the Puerto Morelos Taxi Drivers’ Union.

“Following the complaint filed by the taxi drivers’ families, personnel from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Crime of Kidnapping and Extortion, and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Crime of Disappearance Committed by Private Individuals, are gathering evidence to clarify this incident and find those responsible,” they said.

“Initial investigations indicate that on March 9th of this year at around 9:20 p.m., relatives of one of the victims received a photograph via WhatsApp, apparently of one of the missing men, who was kneeling and wearing a hood that revealed part of his face. They were also told to wait for instructions.

“Through field and technological work, police located the vehicles driven by the victims, which were abandoned at kilometer 5 of the Ruta de los Cenotes (Route of the Cenotes).

“Subsequently, a video shared from the phone number of one of the missing men circulated on social media in which he is seen making statements about alleged ties to a criminal group operating in this municipality.

“This Social Representation, together with authorities from all levels of government, continue working to bring the victims back to their families and bring those responsible for their disappearance to justice,” they said.
