Cancun, Q.R. — Civil Protection says they are waiting for the results of a technical appraisal made on the hotel zone Ferris wheel. The results will determine if the ride can be reopened to the public.
Antonio Riveroll Ribbón, who heads Cancun Civil Protection, says they are waiting for the results of the technical appraisal of the Plaza La Isla Ferris wheel in order to determine whether the attraction can operate or, if necessary, apply sanctions for the detected defects.
He explained that the New Zealand-made amusement ride is running, but has not yet been opened to the public because it is still undergoing a rigorous evaluation process.
“The wheel is running for testing, not for public rides. They are running tests. They just need to submit their expert reports and opinions. Once they submit them, we’ll go there, conduct review tests with them,” he explained.
He reported that the opening timeline will depend on the completion of the final tests and the results of the technical assessment.

Riveroll Ribbón stated that the attraction has the corresponding permits and that the goal is to ensure user safety. On August 18, an internal power failure caused the Ferris wheel to suddenly stop, leaving riders trapped inside the cars.
