Authorities attempt to evict Tren Maya colony outside Tulum

Tulum, Q.R. — Another eviction attempt was made, this time on the outskirts of Tulum. On Wednesday, police announced the illegal occupants had to leave since they were occupying private land.

Authorities arrived at around 1:00 p.m. to remove approximately 100 people accused of squatting on the privately owned three-hectare plot of land.

Modest brick buildings have already been constructed on the land, signifying the start of an irregular colony. The colony, located along the highway approximately three kilometers from the town of Tulum toward Felipe Carrillo Puerto, has been named Tren Maya by its residents.

Local authorities attempted to evict the families occupying the invaded three-hectare property Wednesday, however, they gathered in numbers and refused to leave. The occupants of the land defended what they consider their property, a property in dispute since the owner died.

The dispute over ownership has been ongoing for several years. Authorities sent to complete the eviction left without evicting the occupants, but applied an official state closure seal at the entrance to the colony.
